Rendering Wood Grain

When I choose to render wood grain sometimes it is aligned the way I want it and sometimes the grain is not aligned the way I want it.

Is there a way to align wood grain to the model?

Thanks, that is somewhat helpful.  Looks like I will have to add a lot of layers to get wood grain aligned.  One of the models I was hoping to render was a wooden boat but that would involve way to many layers to make the planks and structural members look correct.
